Story

The story

Three years after breaking up with her childhood sweetheart Peter, Jenna returns home to recuperate, her leg wrapped in thick gauze. Her mother, Ms. Yan, has cooked Peter's favourite King Crab Legs for a dinner with Zoe, the student she once brought into their home and now Peter's wife. Jenna sits in her wheelchair and says nothing.

Her mother warns her not to make a scene, insisting Zoe changed Jenna's college application for her own good and that Jenna cannot blame others for choosing to be a conflict journalist. Jenna only smiles. She remembers growing up beside Peter, the jacaranda tree, his promise to marry her, and how Zoe slowly took her place while her mother stood on the outsider's side.

When Zoe shyly announces she is three months pregnant, Peter lowers his eyes and Ms. Yan fusses over her. Jenna keeps silent, no longer provoked. She has already decided to move forward.

Opening excerpt

In the third year after breaking up with my childhood sweetheart, my mom cooked his favorite King Crab Legs.

"Jenna, get up today, don't make a scene with her."

Zoe is my mom's favorite student, Peter is the boy I loved for ten years.

Seeing me sitting in a wheelchair without saying a word.

My mom raised her volume, attempting to cover up her guilty conscience:

"Zoe changed your college application back then for your own good. But being a conflict journalist was your choice, you can't blame others."

I just smiled and said calmly:

"Yeah!"
