Story

The story

Elodie Sterling falls ill while working at a club, and the doctor warns she needs money fast for surgery. Her mother, Nova Sterling, refuses to help, sneering that Elodie should keep earning the only way she knows. Broke and desperate, Elodie turns to her boyfriend, Beckett Hastings, who is wealthy and devoted, but she cannot bring herself to tell him the truth about her illness or her work.

Nova has spent years forcing Elodie to pay off her father's gambling debts, pushing her into prostitution and threatening to expose her. When Elodie collapses at school and wakes in the hospital, Nova refuses to pay for the surgery, tossing cash at her and telling her she should die. Elodie hides her condition from Beckett, afraid he will leave if he learns the truth.

As her health worsens and the money runs out, Elodie must decide how much longer she can keep her double life hidden from the one person who seems to care.

Opening excerpt

I begged my mom, Nova Sterling, to lend me some.

Nova shoved me aside and sneered, "Your mouth down there's a mess. What was wrong with the one up here? Still works fine, doesn't it?"

I was so broke I didn't even have pride left. I was scrambling for money anywhere I could. Then my boyfriend, Beckett Hastings, found me, eyes bloodshot. He kept shoving money into my account. "You need cash, right? I'll give you whatever you want! A hundred grand, will that cover it? A million, just say the word!"

I let out a cold laugh. "I've got a gynecological disease. You still wanna send me money?"
