Story
The story
At his engagement party, Christopher is asked by his fiancée Ruth to hand over his bespoke Italian suit to Troy, an impoverished junior from her college whose own clothes were ruined. Christopher surrenders it, as he has surrendered for five years, and watches Ruth smooth Troy's lapels with a tenderness she once refused him. Guests mistake Troy for the groom, and Ruth lets them, telling her aunt that generous Christopher insisted.
Christopher slips off his engagement ring, leaves it on the guest registry table, and walks out of the hall. Ruth's later call is calm and certain he will return, reminding him he has never had the courage to leave her. But Christopher ends the call and stays away, remembering the girl who once warmed his hands in the cold and wondering when she became someone else.
Opening excerpt
"Troy got his suit dirty," she said, her voice breezy, as if she were asking to borrow a pen. "Let him wear yours for a bit."
I froze, my fingers still tangled in the silk.
She offered a small, dismissive shrug. "Everyone knows you’re the groom today anyway, Christopher. It doesn't matter what you wear."
