Story
The story
Five years into his marriage to Clara, Liam's company goes public, and he buys her a million-dollar sports car for her birthday. Clara is furious at the extravagance, demanding his bank cards and reminding him how little Leo, the struggling student she sponsors, survives on each month. When Liam instead gives the car keys to Clara's best friend Chloe, Clara barely objects — her mind is on Leo's interview the next morning. She leaves her own birthday party to help him prepare, and at the door asks Liam for the car so Leo will have something to drive.
Liam refuses, and questions where the money Clara has sent Leo for four years has gone. Clara defends Leo as responsible and selfless, and accuses Liam of thinking only of himself. Later, Clara walks out with Leo wearing Liam's tie — the first gift she ever gave him — and tells Liam she will spend the night helping Leo prepare.
Watching them go, Liam wonders why the woman who vowed to build a life with him now saves all her care for someone else.

But she just tossed the car keys onto the table, eyes narrowed in accusation.
"A million dollars? How could you be so reckless?"
She linked her arm through Leo's, the financially struggling university student she sponsored.
"Leo survives on less than five hundred a month. Imagine the good that money could have done for him."
I frowned. "I earned every cent. You're my wife. I wanted to give you something spectacular."
