Story
The story
Eleanor carries a "Rumors Come True" system: every lie spoken about her falls upon the one who tells it. In school and college, false whispers about her turned against the gossips themselves, and for years no one dared to slander her.
At her engagement party to James, his childhood friend Maya raises a toast and calmly announces that hospital records show Eleanor has had seven miscarriages, and that she bore a child at eighteen. The guests gasp, and James demands the truth. Eleanor warns Maya to take back the rumors, but Maya presses on, insisting she only wants James to know Eleanor's true character.
Then a small girl, Lily Taylor, runs up calling Maya "Mommy." As James defends Maya and the guests turn on Eleanor, Maya plays a video on the banquet screen, claiming it proves Eleanor's past. The whispers swell, and James's face darkens.
Opening excerpt
I possess a "Rumors Come True" system, where any lie uttered about me manifests upon the slanderer.
In high school, a classmate, envious of my generous allowance, claimed I was being kept by someone, selling myself. That very day, she was taken to a sleazy karaoke bar and forced into being a hostess.
In college, a male student remarked that my queasy stomach and picky eating must be morning sickness. Immediately, his belly swelled; for ten months, he swelled, only to vomit nothing but sour bile.
From then on, no one dared to gossip about me.
