Story

The story

Sarah has spent her whole youth on Julian: a seven-year romance that began in college and ended in a marriage now hollowed out by his affair. When he finally asks for a divorce, she refuses to let go, determined that the other woman will never be anything but a mistress. She stages suicide attempts to pull him back, but each one only drives him further away, until his silence becomes total and his patience runs out.

On the balcony, she asks whether he truly means to go through with the divorce. He looks at her with nothing but exhaustion, turns, and walks out the door. She jumps, and dies.

Now a ghost, Sarah watches the man who betrayed her break down inside the house she can never return to, and finds herself savoring his grief. Certain at last that Julian never loved her, she lingers over the memory of the young man who once fought for her and the stranger he became.

Opening excerpt

Except, my story didn't have the part where he begs. Just the part where everything burns.

Because I actually died.

I became a ghost, watching the man who betrayed me. Seven days after I passed, it was like a delayed reaction finally crushed him. Inside the house I could never go back to, he howled and wept, utterly broken.

You ask me how that felt?

I just stood there, blankly, savoring every inch of agony on his face. I listened intently to his desperate desolation over my departure.
