Story

The story

For eighteen years, Caleb Smyth has lived in the shadow of his twin brother, Carson, whom their family has always favored. When a family trip departs without him, a deleted message and a separate group chat confirm what he has long suspected: he was left behind on purpose. Even his childhood friend, Maya Bingham, appears to have chosen Carson.

Resolving to stop begging for affection he will never receive, Caleb changes his train ticket and his university application, turning away from the local school he and Maya had planned to attend together. Yet when he returns from his own trip, his mother Megan Burton, his father Jude Smyth, and his sister Carina Smyth greet him with complaints rather than concern, and the shirts offered to him turn out to be free T-shirts thrown in with Carson's purchases.

As the last illusions of family warmth fall away, Caleb prepares to leave the home that never wanted him and search for his own happiness alone.

Opening excerpt

As I wonder what is going on, a message from my younger twin brother, Carson Smyth, suddenly pops up in the family group chat. "Oh, no! I forgot to update in this group chat that the departure time has been moved forward!"

The very next second, the message is deleted.

I stare blankly at the empty chat, my eyes stinging. So they have another group chat—one that doesn't include me.

Still reeling, I get a call from Mom. "I'm sorry, Caleb. The departure time was moved up by an hour, and I forgot to tell you. Hurry and take a cab here! You might still be able to catch up—"
