The Night He Didn’t Save Our Baby

When the dam breaks, Sophie is trapped on the rooftop of Building Three with her one-month-old son. She calls her husband Ethan on the private channel he gave her, the frequency meant only for her, and begs him to come for them. Instead she hears him comfort Mandy, the girl he always kept close, and then the green light of her channel goes dark. He has blocked her.

A rescue boat's searchlight sweeps across Sophie's face and moves on, speeding toward the far bank where Mandy waits. Sophie tears the GPS bracelet from her wrist, lashes her baby to her chest, and slides down into the rising water with nothing left to shout.

At dawn a helicopter winches her from the flood. Her son has stopped breathing. The bracelet, still blinking, is sealed in an evidence bag, its receiver log holding one cold word: blocked.
