Story
The story
In a house where silence is law, a father named Arthur has installed a decibel meter and fines his family for every sound: speaking, laughing, even crying. His daughter Anna, taught since age four that noise costs money, has learned to swallow her pain and stay quiet, her allowance sinking into debt for the smallest slip.
When her aunt Lynn arrives on Anna's fifth birthday with cake and gifts, the meter redlines and Arthur demands fees, forcing Anna to choose between the treat and doubling her debt. Anna refuses the cake, and her aunt leaves in fury, slipping her a single coin for emergencies.
That night, feverish and alone, Anna dares not fetch water or call for help, knowing every sound carries a price. When morning comes, Arthur calculates the cost of a hospital visit and shows her the bill.

Speaking above 40 decibels was a one-dollar fine. Laughing over 60 decibels cost five.
Crying was a capital offense: ten dollars a second.
When I was four, I broke my arm. I didn't make a sound. I bit through two of my own teeth and saved my father a few hundred dollars in "noise fees."
