Story

The story

For three years, Aurelia stood beside her husband Joseph guarding the Northern Frontier while he sent her nothing. When he finally returned to the Capital, he brought only the widow Liz and her children, claiming a sacred duty to the deputy who died saving him. In her last life, Aurelia endured frontier hardship with their children, only to lose them and be cast aside. Now she has awoken on the day they would die, and she flees with them to the General's Manor, where guards mistake them for beggars and Liz greets her in silks and jewels. Joseph demands to know why she broke their agreement, while Liz's son Conrad calls him Father and her daughter Celia sneers at Aurelia's hungry children. When Joseph asks when she will return to the frontier, Aurelia refuses to go back.

Opening excerpt

"He died saving me," my husband claimed. "Caring for them is my sacred duty."

He gave me a wooden hairpin while installing them in the General's mansion.

When frontier wars raged, they feasted in luxury while I fled through wilderness with our children.

Enemy scouts slaughtered them while I foraged.

When General Joseph arrived, he shed no tears. "The title needs an heir," he said. "Liz's son will do."

"Don't worry," he added. "Even if I marry her, I'll always love you most."

I drew my dagger and ended it all.
