Story

The story

Riley has lived with the Sterling family since she was six, when her father drowned saving Lucas from a flash flood. Lucas has looked after her ever since, but when she overhears him say he never asked her father to save him and owes her nothing, she decides to leave. She applies to Teach For America and plans to move out without telling him.

When Lucas insists she attend their high school reunion, Riley refuses for the first time, saying she is not his burden or his responsibility. She accepts a condo from Mrs. Sterling, packs her belongings, and prepares to depart. On the day she leaves, she sends Lucas a final message: goodbye.

Opening excerpt

Half an hour later, I couldn't wait, walked down myself, but heard Lucas on the phone at the corner:

"I know, I'll bring her back! It wasn't me who asked her dad to save me back then, I don't owe her anything!"

"On what grounds does she guilt trip me!"

My heart clenched tight. If I could, I would rather my dad didn't save him back then, so I wouldn't have to live under someone else's roof.

That night, I submitted my application for Teach For America, completely staying away from Lucas.
