Story

The story

When Dad buys cotton candy for his two daughters, his younger daughter Lily takes hers happily, but her sister Emma bursts into tears, furious that Lily got the same as her. Mom pulls the candy from Lily's hands and gives it to Emma, then, when Lily cries, buys ten sticks and orders her to sit on a mall bench and finish every one before she can leave. Mom takes Emma and walks away.

By the seventh stick, the mall catches fire. Lily, afraid to disobey, keeps eating as the flames spread. The cotton candy vendor carries her outside, but Emma tells her that their parents went back in to rescue her. Lily runs back into the fire and never comes out.

Now a spirit invisible to everyone, Lily watches her parents mourn her as heartless, while Emma's lie goes unnoticed. At home, Dad roasts the turkey Lily had begged for, and the family of three embraces beneath the Christmas lights, leaving Lily to float alone.

Opening excerpt

Dad bought cotton candy for my sister and me—one for each of us.

I happily took mine, but my sister burst into tears.

"Why does she get the same as me! I knew it—once you had a second child, I wouldn't be the only precious one anymore!"

Mom listened, then gently pulled the cotton candy from my hand.

"This one's for your sister too. You can have something else later."

But I wanted cotton candy too.

I started crying from the hurt.

Mom completely lost it.
