Story
The story
For three years, Jesse has given everything for his younger brother Toby: weekly blood draws for a rare blood disorder, a kidney after acute renal failure, and now, at twenty-two, he is being prepped for a heart transplant. His family believes he is blindly devoted. Then he overhears the truth behind the closed door of the consultation room.
Toby is not sick. The surgeries are a loyalty test devised by his older sister Morgan and tolerated by his father, a way to prove how far Jesse will go for his brother. What they do not know is that years of forced blood extractions and organ loss have left Jesse's body in irreversible failure; he has only days left to live. Still, he signs the consent form while Morgan times him with a stopwatch, and his family exhales in relief.
When a nurse sees the bruises and puncture marks on his arm and tries to stop the procedure, Morgan accuses him of orchestrating an escape. Then Toby arrives, gentle and frail, urging Jesse not to donate — and Jesse realises his brother has known all along.
Opening excerpt
The harsh overhead glare of the surgical lights flickered off, and once again, the doctor stepped out to hand down another critical condition notice for my younger brother.
"His heart went into sudden arrest," the surgeon said, his voice flat with routine gravity. "We need to secure a donor immediately."
