Luxury Club on My Card, Panic at Payment

When her sister Marta gives her a $20,000 membership card to a high-end ice skating club, Lester thinks nothing of it—until her roommate Russell starts angling for an invitation. Russell, who ranks classmates by family wealth and never spends a cent of her own, insists Lester join her for a day at the club. Lester declines, busy with graduate school applications.

But Russell's questions about the card—whether someone else can use it, whether transactions show up on the member's phone—make Lester uneasy. A call to the club confirms that any charge requires the member's presence or explicit authorization. Yet Russell has already bragged about bringing friends, chosen the priciest coach, and used the best equipment. When the bill comes due, will her scheme collapse?

A story of envy, deception, and a membership card that reveals more than anyone expected.
