Story

The story

A car accident leaves Matias Campbell brain dead after he shields his wife, Dr. Verena Scott, from a truck. Rushed into surgery, he needs the one physician in the province who has ever saved a brain-dead patient: Verena herself. Yet she sits in the corridor, calmly playing a game on her phone, and refuses to operate, citing hospital rules that forbid a doctor from treating close family.

Her mother-in-law Milana Campbell and father-in-law Alastor Campbell fall to their knees, begging her to save their son. Odette Hewitt, Matias's attending physician, accuses her of valuing her career over her husband's life, while onlookers condemn her coldness. Verena lifts her swollen right wrist, its tendon severed, and insists she can no longer hold a scalpel.

When Alastor offers to transfer the house and car into her name, Verena finally raises her gaze. What she wants in return for Matias's life remains unspoken.

Opening excerpt

He was rushed straight into the operating room. I, however, remained seated, calmly scrolling through a game on my phone as though the world hadn’t just shattered.

Moments later, Odette Hewitt, my husband’s attending physician, burst through the doors in a frenzy, her face a mask of desperation.

“Dr. Scott, your husband is brain dead! Only you can handle this; please, come with me!”

Her words cut through the silence like glass shattering, her pleading gaze fixed on me.

After all, I was the only doctor in the entire province who had successfully treated a brain-dead patient.
