Story
The story
On her wedding day, Sarah Miller's estranged father, Richard Davis, appears uninvited and shatters the celebration. More than a decade earlier he abandoned Sarah and her mother, left fifty thousand dollars behind, and took only her twin brother, Leo. Now he smiles as if nothing happened, while her mother urges Sarah to play along.
Sarah cannot forget Leo, who died at eighteen on a cold hospital bed. Her mother blamed the hospital and a homewrecker for his death. But while waitressing, Sarah overhears her mother demanding money from a wealthy woman who calls her a mistress, and learns her mother may have given up her son for money.
If Richard owned a company, was Leo's death truly about unpaid surgery? Sarah begins to question everything her mother told her.
Opening excerpt
But one man's arrival shattered the festive mood.
My father—Richard Davis.
Funny, right? We don't even share the same last name. Over a decade ago, he dropped fifty thousand dollars on the table, ditched my mom and me, took my brother, and walked out.
…
"Sarah, honey, this is your father," Mom said, beaming like nothing was wrong.
Richard Davis smiled at me too. "Sarah, I'm your dad. Do you remember me?"
"Of course, she remembers her father," Mom chimed in, then looked pointedly at me. "Right, Sarah?"
