Mom, Look at My Heart

Cast out by her father John Chance into a snowstorm over a single chicken leg, a young woman dies alone in the cave she once hid in as a child. Her body is later uncovered by his archaeological team, headless and unrecognizable, and sent to a morgue. John dismisses the corpse as some disreputable woman, never suspecting it is his own daughter, while his new family feasts and her bracelet passes unnoticed around his wife's wrist.

In the morgue, the coroner Ian Jensen finds the body bears a rare congenital heart condition. He calls Wendy Sawyer, the girl's mother, who cuts out the heart to use as a teaching specimen, ignoring his protest that it is illegal. The girl's spirit watches, remembering how her mother once promised to know her no matter what she looked like.

Now only her heart remains. Mom, do you still recognize me?
