Story
The story
Rowan, Oracle of the Verdant Clan, once claimed the exiled prince Reed as her pledge-husband in the Verdant Wilds, and the world called it cruelty. Years later Reed has seized the throne of Crownsgate and taken Empress Isolde as his bride, and he leads his armies to conquer the Verdant Clan. When he bursts into Rowan's chambers, his fingers close around her throat and he demands to know whether she regrets casting him aside.
Rowan answers only with a plea for ancient herbs, and Reed drags her back to Crownsgate, where he crushes the ginseng beneath his heel and has her thrown into a vat of blight-worms before his wedding rites. He does not know that she once invoked the Soul-Link Parasite to draw a fatal poison from his veins into her own, or that the Blight is now eating her alive.
As Reed and Isolde celebrate their union, Rowan's blood is the only thing that repels the creatures swarming her, and her time is running out.
Opening excerpt
The Exiled Prince, Reed, spent three years banished to the Verdant Wilds. That I claimed him, bending his will to mine, became the greatest stain on his honor.
Years later, he seized the throne, then personally led his armies to conquer the Verdant Clan.
The day he burst into my chambers, the Blight within me flared, a torment worse than death.
His fingers clamped around my throat, his voice a ragged growl.
