Story
The story
A convicted murderer wakes on a sun-drenched terrace in the Maldives and is dragged into the frail body of Virginia, the martyred heroine of a trashy early-2000s romance. A system orders her to endure bullying, family abuse, and the billionaire male lead who will harvest her kidney for his dying childhood sweetheart—all for a happily-ever-after. She refuses.
In a high-school restroom, when Brittany and her lackeys attack, Virginia dodges every blow so the strikes land on Phoebe, the cowardly classmate she was meant to protect. Summoned to the principal's office, her gambling father Darren lunges for her hair but grabs the principal's toupee instead. With the system threatening neuro-electric shocks and expulsion, Virginia keeps rewriting the script—and the system can barely keep up.
Opening excerpt
Specifically, I was shoved into the frail, trembling body of a tragic romance heroine.
The mandate? Play the meek, self-sacrificing martyr who endures endless abuse with a tear in her eye and forgiveness in her heart.
I had to laugh. "Meek?" Honey, please. I don't possess a single delicate bone in my body.
Before this, I was a convicted murderer.
...
"Smack."
The sharp crack of flesh against flesh reverberated through the institutional tile of the high school restroom.
A stinging heat bloomed across my left cheek.
