Story
The story
Harper's birth left her mother, Diane, scarred in body and mind, and from infancy the slightest sound from the child triggers rages that end in her mother's hands around her throat. Her brother Tyler tells her their mother was gentle before her, and her father urges her to endure, promising she will get better. Harper learns to make herself small, silent, waiting.
On her sixth birthday, a hungry glance at her cake shatters the fragile peace. Her mother screams that she nearly died on the operating table, Tyler turns on her, and her father says they should never have had her. Harper climbs over the balcony railing and falls.
Her spirit drifts back into the silent apartment, where she cannot grasp a broom or wipe her tears. Unseen, she follows her family to a restaurant and home again, listening as they speak of her as a burden and a curse, and as her father, for once, tells her mother to let her sleep. In the morning the table is empty, and her room is found empty too, the bed made with military precision.

It was a difficult labor, one that left her body scarred and her mind fractured by severe postpartum depression.
From the time I was an infant, the slightest sound from me would send her into a frenzy. She would scream, her hands finding my throat, squeezing until my face turned purple.
But then, the storm would pass. She would collapse in front of my crib, sobbing, whispering, "I’m sorry, I’m so sorry."
