Story

The story

Natalie's husband Mark sits her down at the dinner table and confesses he is a wanted criminal, a man who robbed a place and caused a death when he was eighteen. He tells her he must turn himself in, that she should find a better man and move on, and that divorce papers are already waiting on the desk. Their son Ben and Mark's mother Diane sit by, unsurprised, and Diane insists on dragging Mark to the station herself.

But Natalie has lived this moment before. In her past life she believed every word, spent decades scraping by to support a man behind bars and to send money to the family of his supposed victim, only to learn the whole story was a vanishing act. Now she is back on the day the lie began, and she is done crying. As Mark and Diane scramble to keep her away from the police and press her to fund the victim's forgiveness, Natalie quietly moves her savings, hunts for the missing evidence in Mark's desk, and hires an investigator to look into a woman named Valerie Thorne.

This time she intends to give his performance a real audience.

Opening excerpt

He claimed he didn’t want to drag me down with him, so he was going to turn himself in. He told me to find a better man and move on.

In my past life, my heart broke for him. I spent decades pinching pennies, living on scraps just to provide for our son and support him while he was behind bars. I waited until my hair turned white, only to see him strolling down the street, hand-in-hand with the "one who got away," buying her vintage Hermès and Chanel like money was water.
