Done Being The Performative Wife

Cecilia has spent years trying to win over her mother-in-law, Martina, treating her like her own flesh and blood. She moved Martina into the guest suite, filled her closets with new clothes, booked spa memberships, and pulled every string to secure a private dining room at the exclusive restaurant Martina demanded for her birthday. Cecilia never counted the cost, believing generosity would build a warm, harmonious family.

Yet when the reservation is confirmed, Martina calls her performative and fake, praising instead her younger son's wife, Brittany, who cooks casseroles and sends chamomile-tea advice. Martina insists money is worthless beside heartfelt care, conveniently forgetting that every luxury she now scorns was her own request. Cecilia's husband, David, had warned her she was spoiling his mother into entitlement.

Standing in the venue under the staff's gaze, Cecilia feels an icy chill settle in her bones. She must decide how much longer she will keep performing for a woman who refuses to see her.
