Story
The story
On her twenty-second birthday, Lara is handed a framed certificate naming her Best Doormat of the Year. Luther, her childhood sweetheart, and Chaya, her best friend, laugh as the room applauds the joke at her expense. Lara tears the certificate to shreds and declares she is done being their doormat.
Luther turns the moment against her, calling her petty and blaming her for spoiling the fun, while Chaya plays the wounded victim. Lara recalls the thesis defense they ruined by keeping her up all night, and the years of being their emotional dumping ground. When Luther produces a second certificate naming Chaya Girlfriend of the Year, Lara hands it over without a fight.
Her safety net is already set: a teaching post in an isolated Appalachian town. Her birthday wish is a clean, permanent breakup from Luther.
Opening excerpt
The title printed in bold letters read: "Best Doormat of the Year."
The citation underneath expressed heartfelt gratitude for writing both of their senior capstone theses, acting as their human mouthpiece whenever they fought, and finishing whatever leftovers they didn’t feel like eating.
The room erupted into hysterical laughter. Guests clapped, agreeing that the title couldn't be more deserved.
Luther handed me the framed certificate, his hands shaking with laughter.
"Lara, keep up the good work."
Chaya, standing beside him, eagerly high-fived him in celebration.
