The Angel's Lie

Ten years ago, Chloe's twin sister Lily took the boy Chloe loved, Ethan Archer, and built a life from Chloe's stolen work. When Lily was dying of acute leukemia, Chloe was her only perfect match for a bone marrow transplant, and she signed the form to decline the donation. Her mother slapped her; her father called her a monster; Ethan asked why she would not save her sister.

Now, on the Fourth of July beneath the fireworks over the Washington Monument, Ethan kneels with a diamond ring and says they are getting married because it was Lily's last wish. Chloe agrees, and the whispers follow her: the war hero, the dead fiancée, the sister who swooped in. At her parents' house, her family calls her a murderer, and Ethan repeats that Lily wanted him to take her place and care for her sister.

Only then does Chloe speak the words she has held for ten years: Lily was a thief, and the truth she was so afraid of is the reason she begged Chloe not to save her.
