After three years in a coma from a car accident, Julian wakes to a family overjoyed by his recovery. Yet the devotion feels too perfect. Men's clothes that don't fit him fill his closet, baby items appear in his mother-in-law Susan's shopping cart, and his father-in-law David receives congratulations on a newborn. His wife Serena, once devoted, now works late and returns with unfamiliar scents and a red mark on her neck.

Following Serena one night, Julian finds her gathered with his in-laws around a man who looks almost exactly like him, holding a child who calls Serena "Mommy." They speak of a birthday party for Leo and of hiding everything from Julian. His childhood friend Mike slips and calls him Dylan, and at his own welcome dinner, his former friends surround the double instead.

Julian records what he sees, realizing someone has taken his place during the years he lay unconscious. Even Serena forgets he is allergic to lobster. What was the point of waking up at all?
