The Midnight Knock

In the dead of night, a frantic pounding wakes Sarah and her husband David. Their neighbor Rick is shouting that his father is having an episode and needs a ride to the ER. Sarah freezes. In a past life, they opened that door out of kindness, and it cost them everything: a crash, a lawsuit, their savings, their lives. This time she tells David to stay silent and pretend they are not home.

Listening at the door, Sarah hears Rick and another man muttering in the hallway. They are not calling an ambulance. They are waiting for the old man to die, and they wanted witnesses. When the knocking finally stops, David realizes the neighbors were trying to set them up.

The next morning, Rick and Karen confront them at the gate, blaming Sarah for delaying the old man's treatment. Sarah refuses to apologize, and Karen takes her grievance to the community group chat, where the neighbors turn on each other. Sarah knows this is only the beginning.
