Story

The story

On the eve of his engagement party, Davis plays a game of Never Have I Ever with his fiancée Molly and his best man Reese. When Reese hints at a woman in the room he cannot have, only Molly keeps her finger up, and she calls her loyal fiancé boring and dull. Then Reese reveals a detail about Molly's body that only a lover should know, and Molly laughs along. Davis quietly announces that his grand wedding of the century is canceled, then walks out into the night.

Behind the door, Molly tells the others he cannot live without her and that Reese deserves an apology. Alone with Davis by the windows, Reese mocks him as a dull office worker who cannot understand what a woman like Molly needs, while Davis warns him to cut the games. Davis returns to the dark apartment, where the wedding portrait shows only him smiling.

Opening excerpt

The night before our engagement, my best man Reese suggested we play Never Have I Ever — our version, where you name something you have that you think no one else does, and anyone who doesn't have it puts a finger down.

"Sitting in this room is someone I can't have," he said.

Everyone else's fingers went down, except Reese's and my fiancée Molly's.

The others erupted in whistles and teasing, not caring that I was right there.

"I have the most loyal fiancé," Molly said. "Boring and dull."
