Story

The story

After five years as Damon Blackwell's devoted, volatile girlfriend, Ainsley Hayes returns to him transformed: calm, compliant, and utterly indifferent. When she finds a torn foil packet in his luxury SUV, she neither screams nor accuses him, only tucks it away and reminds him to check the expiry. Damon, Manhattan's golden heir, is unnerved by her composure.

He insists the packet belonged to Tatum Van Doren, the spoiled nineteen-year-old daughter of his father's oldest partner, whom he treats as a little sister. Yet Ainsley remembers the night Damon left her feverish on the I-95 to rescue Tatum, and the slap he dealt her at the police station that ended them. Six months apart left her with permanent hearing loss and tinnitus in one ear.

Now Damon demands the jealousy he once despised, while Ainsley offers only a soft, obedient smile. He cannot decide whether her calm is forgiveness or punishment.
