Where the Moon Doesn't Shine

For five years, Anna has kept her relationship with Liam Song a secret, because their company forbids office romance. In public he keeps his distance, and no one suspects a thing. But on a corporate hike up Mount Sterling, she watches him kneel to bandage the ankle of a new intern, Tina, then carry her down the mountain on his back.

At work, the same pattern repeats. A project Anna led for two months is credited to Tina, and most of the bonus goes with it. Liam, who once told Anna to figure things out herself, patiently coaches Tina, and lets her eat the lunch Anna quietly prepares for him each day. When a storm knocks out the office power, he shelters Tina with his umbrella and drives her home, while Anna walks home soaked.

As Anna prepares to resign and leave the city, she boards a train home, deleting their photos. Her story with Liam began in Crestwood, and continued in Ashville, where she once charged a group of masked men to protect him. Now she wonders whether the distance he kept was ever really about the rules.
