Story

The story

In Ravenbrook, the wealthy Whitmore family keeps a chilling tradition: every new bride must spend her wedding night alone in the ancestral temple. Julian Whitmore, the heir, has buried eight wives that way, each found mangled at dawn, each death ruled a suicide despite airtight surveillance showing no one else entered. Now no family will send a daughter into that house.

Claire, whose older sister was Julian's first bride, returns after eight years of studying criminal investigation abroad. She arrives in a blood-red wedding dress and offers herself as the ninth wife, telling Mrs. Whitmore the ancestors will like her. She remembers her sister's promise to protect her, and the father who called that sister a disgrace.

What Claire wants is the truth no investigation ever found.

Opening excerpt

All of Ravenbrook knew that the wealthiest clan, the Whitemore family, followed an eerie tradition.

Whenever a new bride entered the household, she was required to spend a night alone in the ancestral temple, chanting Buddhist sutras. If she emerged unharmed by dawn, she would be considered accepted by her ancestors and fully recognized as a member of the Whitemore family.

It was supposed to be symbolic—a mere custom to honor the past.

But something went terribly wrong when Julian Whitmore, the current heir, married for the first time.
