Story

The story

For twenty years, Elara and Julian were inseparable. Their families even discussed an engagement, and everyone assumed they were destined for each other. Then Julian announced he had met someone else, and Elara quietly took back her heart.

Julian has now been dating Bella for two years, parading her through their circle while Elara keeps her distance. At his birthday party, Bella mocks Elara's mature style, and Julian smooths things over. When Bella playfully asks why Julian never visited her as a baby, his uncle Adrian Sterling answers that he did see her, and even held her as an infant, his gaze resting on Elara.

After the party, Adrian is waiting in Elara's car, claiming he cannot remember the way home and asking to stay the night. Elara recalls the winter Julian announced his relationship, when Adrian returned and offered to take her to the US.

Opening excerpt

My childhood friend's girlfriend is a chronic doomscroller, obsessed with the latest TikTok trend. She pestered him to play along:

"Julian, you're a year older than me. Why didn't you come see me when I was born? Do you not love me?"

Julian didn't know whether to laugh or cry. He casually played along, then turned to his serious, old-fashioned uncle who happened to be there:

"Uncle Adrian, how would you answer that?"

Adrian, usually a man of few words, said: "I did go see her."

"Not only did I see her, I even held her when she was a baby."
