Story

The story

After five years as a prisoner of war, a former Omega named Tessa Ward has been reduced to Inmate 89757, her memories scrambled and her scent gland carved out. When the System in her head reboots, it warns that her husband, Gideon Cole, now Supreme Marshal of the Coalition, has a corruption index of ninety-eight percent and is on the verge of triggering the Fourth Interstellar War. She is the only one who can stop him.

But Tessa is a broken husk, her body emaciated and her spirit crushed. She refuses, believing Gideon has moved on and that without her pheromones she cannot calm him. The System desperately offers to restore her appearance and rebuild her gland, but she remains defiant, convinced the universe is already rotten.

As the System pleads, Tessa recalls how she was once forced into Gideon's life by the same System, and how she came to love him. Now, with the galaxy on the brink, she must decide whether to reach out to the man she once loved—or let everything burn.

In my fifth year as a prisoner of war, my memories were little more than shattered glass, scrubbed and rewritten by enemy neuro-scramblers.

When the System finally rebooted in my head, I was squatting in the camp yard with a dozen other starving inmates, scraping gray slop from a rusted trough.

“Host! Gideon Cole’s corruption index has hit ninety-eight percent. He is on the verge of triggering the Fourth Interstellar War. You are the only one who can stop him!”
