On the day she was to be engaged to her childhood sweetheart, Noah Pratt, Virginia fled the country and cut off all contact with him. Six years later she returns to Portdale to oversee the moving of her parents' graves, and at the cemetery gate she comes face to face with Noah, gaunt and haunted, demanding to know why she ran.
