Story

The story

A trucker is driving his Freightliner semi home after the New Year break when an SUV cuts into the gap he left behind a school bus. The driver toys with him for miles, then swerves without signaling on a downhill curve. To avoid rear-ending the bus, the trucker wrenches the wheel aside and slams into the SUV, dragging a dozen cars into the wreck.

He pulls the SUV driver from the burning vehicle, and the man thanks him with a slap, a broken nose, and a smashed dashcam. When the teacher Claire Whitman speaks up for him, the man turns his bat on her too, then rouses the crowd against the trucker, demanding millions in cash. The trucker's cargo is charity donations for a children's shelter, and the man begins throwing the boxes into the ravine.

Pinned down by the other drivers, the trucker hears someone suggest searching the cab for the valuables truckers always hide up front.

Opening excerpt

On a long downhill stretch, I spotted a school bus packed with students ahead of me and eased off the gas, leaving plenty of room between us.

Then an SUV cut right into the gap.

I leaned on the horn to warn him off—what he was doing was dangerous—but the driver ignored me completely and flipped me the bird.
