Story

The story

Cedric Simmons is a veteran firefighter trapped under a fallen beam in a burning building, his oxygen nearly gone. When he reaches for his backup canister, he finds only a bottle of water: his wife and captain, Leah Sawyer, has given the canister to her new mentee, Roderick Wyndham, so the frightened rookie can feel secure. Over the walkie-talkie she tells Cedric, a veteran, to find his own way out and stop wasting resources, dismissing his broken leg and failing lungs as a pity act.

Switching to the public channel, Cedric reports that Leah tampered with rescue equipment and requests the Firefighter Emergency Evacuation Act, charging her with gross negligence and attempted homicide. Leah orders the rescue abandoned, and his teammates side with her, leaving him in the flames. Roderick empties the oxygen into the fire and tells Cedric that Leah has wanted a divorce, and that a widow is the best outcome.

Opening excerpt

A beam crashes onto me in the middle of a burning building. At the same time, my oxygen is about to run out.

I writhe and struggle as much as I can to reach for my backup oxygen canister, only to feel my fingers brushing over a bottle of water instead.

When I turn around, I see my wife, Leah Sawyer, giving the last backup oxygen canister to her new mentee, Roderick Wyndham.
