Story
The story
After a car crash, Audrey sits alone in the emergency room while her boss Diana is comforted by her husband. Audrey has called Javon twenty-five times; every call goes to a busy signal. Nine to eleven every night belongs to Bianca, the woman he reads bedtime stories to.
Three years ago Javon insisted they move to Denver and marry, then claimed a bad investment wiped out their savings, including the money Audrey had poured in. She has worked seventy-hour weeks ever since, while Bianca lives in their building, in the very unit they had chosen.
When Audrey finally comes home, Javon barely notices her bandaged forehead. He is about to leave again for Bianca's cat, and Audrey begins to wonder what she is still holding on to.
Opening excerpt
The metal-on-metal screech of the collision still echoed in my ears.
By the time we were rushed to the emergency room, Diana’s husband was already there, pacing the sterile hallway with their little girl piggybacked on his shoulders.
"Why did you bring her out?" Diana gasped, her voice thick with panic. "She's still running a fever..."
Her tone was accusatory, but the frantic terror in her eyes instantly melted into relief the moment she looked at him. She had her anchor.
