Story
The story
Theo promised his dying best friend, Jackie, that he would keep up Jackie's online relationship with a woman he had never met, a woman with severe clinical depression. For three years Theo wrote to her as Jackie, staying with her through her darkest episodes and her rise back to the top of her career, until he finally decided it was time to let the lie end and sent a breakup message.
The instant he sent it, his fiancée Verna's phone lit up with the very same words. Verna, who has always kept her real self hidden behind a polished mask, is the woman he has been writing to all along. As she abandons their wedding plans and races across the country to find the man she believes is Jackie, Theo is left alone with a phone full of her desperate pleas and a pain in his abdomen that will not stop.
He must decide how long he can keep playing a ghost while the woman he loves chases him through a screen.
Opening excerpt
Before my best friend, Jackie, died of cancer, the only thing he couldn't let go of was the girl he’d been dating online—a girl he had never actually met in person.
He grabbed my hand, tears streaming down his face, begging me: "Theo, she has severe clinical depression. I’m terrified this will push her over the edge. Please, log into my account. Keep talking to her, but start pulling away slowly. When enough time has passed, break it off. Please?"
With bloodshot eyes, I promised him I would.
