Story

The story

After the disastrous defeat at the Crimson River, Joric is found among the dead by his senior, Zera, who tears the Core from his body and fuses its power into Kael. She tells him he can form a new Core in time, but the acolytes of Spirit Mountain now heap scorn on him, blaming him for a loss that was Kael's fault. Zera shields Kael, taking him to the Celestial Pool and letting him sleep in Joric's own bed.

Joric resolves to return to the Aethel Clan. His Master supports the choice but asks him to wait three days, until after the Grand Cultivator's Assembly. Stripped of his Core, he can no longer fly on his sword, and every step through the Azurefall Palace is met with whispers and contempt.

Eight hundred years of devotion have come to this. Kael taunts him over the Golden Core he now wields, but Joric warns that what is not truly his can never remain his.

Opening excerpt

I thought she was moved by my years of devotion.

Instead, as I lay helpless, she carved out my Core of power.

Zera looked down at me, her gaze imperious. “You were born with a divine essence. Forming a new Core is only a matter of time for you. But it took Kael a thousand years to reach this point.”

“When we return to the Order, I will help you reform your Core. Don’t be ungrateful.”

It had all been her plan from the start.

I watched as she fused my power into Kael’s body.
