Story
The story
For three years, Elara has mourned her husband Caleb, who supposedly died of an asthma attack, refusing every suitor to honour his memory and raise their son Leo alone. Her in-laws watch her with guilt, her parents urge her to remarry, and she stays firm — until the third anniversary of his death, when she overhears her father-in-law raging in the study about a faked death and a stolen identity.
The truth cuts deeper than grief: the man who died was Caleb's twin brother, Connor. Caleb staged his own death to raise his high-school sweetheart's daughter as her "brother-in-law," leaving Elara and Leo behind. Worse, Leo has always known — he simply stopped calling his father Daddy when his father stopped loving him.
That night Elara calls her parents and agrees to marry Mason, a Colonel in the Air Force. The next morning she faces Caleb over breakfast, and Leo calls him Uncle Connor for the first time.
Opening excerpt
Friends pitied me for becoming a widow so young. My parents begged me to move on, to find a new father for my son.
I refused. I was adamant about honoring his memory, staying single to mourn the love of my life.
But on the third anniversary of his death, I accidentally overheard my father-in-law screaming at my brother-in-law in the study:
"The one with asthma was your brother! The one who died was your brother! Is it really worth it?
