Story

The story

The night his wife Meredith leaves for a business trip, Daniel receives a photo from her assistant Tim: the two of them asleep together in a hotel bed, with a taunting message claiming she is his now. Daniel does not reply. Instead, he opens the all-staff Slack channel of Meridan Digital, the company he built and handed to Meredith, and posts the photo to all two hundred and thirty-six employees, announcing Tim's promotion to the role of the CEO's husband. Then he removes them both from the workspace and goes to sleep.

By morning his phone holds a hundred and thirty-six missed calls. Meredith's messages swing from threats about the divorce and the company's valuation to tearful pleas that Tim drugged her and that she loves only Daniel. Her mother Mandy demands he publicly apologize and call the photo a jealous fabrication. The workspace erupts, and a vice president named Philip posts that Daniel has their backing.

Unmoved, Daniel tells Mandy he has prepared a special gift for Meredith, blocks her number, and waits as the doorbell rings.

Opening excerpt

In it, the two of them lay tangled in a mess of white hotel sheets, fast asleep. He had even added a smug, provocative caption: Hey bro, your wife’s got great technique. She’s mine now.

I didn’t reply.

Instead, I opened our company’s Slack workspace. There were two hundred and thirty-six people online.
