Story
The story
Penniless and wracked by back pain, Eleanor asks each of her three sons for twenty dollars for pain relief patches. The request detonates her family. Her daughters-in-law descend on her home in fury: Jessica smashes the furniture and television, Brenda hurls curses, and Jerry sobs and threatens divorce, each convinced her husband's money should never have gone to Eleanor.
Eleanor has given them everything—her 1,500 monthly social security check split evenly among the three, years of babysitting, cleaning, and a night food stall whose earnings she handed over. When her sons phone to complain that she has abandoned the school run, she tells them her back is failing and a chiropractor has ordered months of bed rest. They dismiss her, and Leo demands she transfer him her remaining money.
Quietly, Eleanor has booked a one-way bus ticket home.

Jessica, my eldest’s wife, wrecked my living room. Brenda, the second, hurled curses at me. Jerry, the youngest’s wife, sobbed and threatened divorce. All accused me of favoritism, each convinced her husband shouldn’t have given me the money.
A chill seeped into my bones. My 1,500 monthly social security check was split evenly—500 to each—every time. I gave them my life: babysitting, cleaning their homes, running a food stall at night. The stall’s Venmo? Rotated daily among them. Every cent I earned went to their pockets.
