Where Love Lies Buried

Kaley has spent years forgiving Liam, the boy she loved at seventeen, for betrayal after betrayal with the same woman, Zoe. Each time, he swears nothing happened and offers the same vow: if he ever betrayed her, may he die a horrible death. Each time, she believes him.

When she finally prints the divorce papers, Liam panics. He begs, weeps, and pleads that Zoe was only a comfort during his lonely years in London. Kaley asks him to swear the old oath against Zoe instead, and he cannot say the words.

As a thunderstorm breaks outside, his phone rings again. The contact reads Zoe from Accounting. Kaley tells him to answer it, and quietly refuses to take him back.
