After being trafficked into Northern Marovia, Bennett Sorrell spends three years chained, tortured and half-starved while searching the compound for his missing sister, Delilah. His cries for help go unanswered until, on the brink of death, he overhears her voice—not as a captive, but as the one who ordered his punishment, all to avenge Nathan Baker, a scholarship student she has taken under her wing.

Waking in a hospital, Bennett finds Delilah furious rather than relieved. She accuses him of faking his wounds and taking pills for sympathy, and when Nathan arrives with a banquet invitation, her sympathy for him only deepens her rage. She has the bodyguards throw Bennett out to suffer another month.

Cast onto the streets, Bennett sees the city celebrating Nathan's graduation and the gifts Delilah has lavished on him. When his former teacher Paul Guest finds him cowering in fear, Bennett can no longer pretend the sister he once trusted is still the one he knew.
