When My Spirit Came Home, He Was with Her

Emma Collins stumbles through the snow with her two children, seeking the safety of home and the husband she has loved since childhood. But when she reaches the door, her hand passes straight through it. Inside, she finds Freddie Tyler, the man she married ten years ago, entangled with a younger woman in their bed. Invisible to them both, Emma watches as the woman deletes the missed calls from Freddie's phone, leaving only the earliest ones, and as Freddie, who once cooked for her as an apology, obediently makes porridge for this stranger.

Aiden clutches his stomach in pain, and baby Kinsey will not wake, yet Emma cannot grasp medicine, cannot lift a phone, cannot make Freddie hear her. He dials her number again and again, frowning when no one answers, while the woman in his arms coaxes him to wait until morning. Emma can only sit beside him, wondering why she still waits for him to come find her.

As dawn breaks and his mother calls about the New Year reunion, Emma remains unseen in her own home, and the truth of what she has become hangs unanswered.
