Story

The story

At the marriage registry, Bob Boyle abandons Aurora Thorne for his first love, Lily Hayes, and marries Lily instead. His messages demand Aurora become his mistress, hand over her father's assets, and give any children to Lily. Aurora, sole heiress to the Thorne family of Kingsbridge, laughs and quietly changes the groom on the license.

A month later, at a private charity auction, Bob and Lily mock Aurora publicly, while the crowd jeers that she cannot live without him. Lily lectures her on self-reliance, and Bob orders Aurora to pay for the fifteen items he bid on for Lily, a bill driven up to 2.5 billion. Aurora bids only once, on a sapphire-blue men's wristwatch meant for the man she has married.

When Bob snatches the watch and straps it on, demanding payment, Aurora's old infatuation has turned to disgust. She is no longer the doormat they believe her to be.

Opening excerpt

We were halfway through signing the marriage license when Bob Boyle’s first love sent him a photo of herself, supposedly having crashed her car into a ditch in a suicide attempt.

Without a second thought, he left me standing there, went and married her instead, and jetted off on a honeymoon.

That same night, her social media was updated with a picture of a floor littered with used condoms.
