Story
The story
The dormitory is burning, and Alice, the campus queen, is trapped on the third floor. In a previous life, Leo charged into the flames and carried her out, only for her to accuse him of arson and attempted assault. His parents disowned him, his best friend Finn testified against him, and he died in prison with broken bones.
Now the fire has just started again, and Finn is begging Leo to go back in. This time Leo refuses. He walks out of the dorm and watches the firefighters rescue Alice, choosing to live even if the whole campus calls him a coward.
But Finn tells Alice's parents that Leo stood by and did nothing, and Mr. Green warns that if anything happens to his daughter, Leo and his family will pay. When Leo's parents arrive, they strike him down in the hospital corridor.
Opening excerpt
I was awarded a plaque for “Heroic Bravery.” I became the hero of the entire university.
But when the campus queen woke up, in front of all the media, she pointed a trembling finger at me and said:
“It was him! He’s the one who set the fire. He wanted to violate me!”
My parents charged over, slapped me hard across the face in public, and knelt before the girl’s parents, kowtowing.
“We failed to raise this monster! We disown him! We beg you, please be merciful!”
