Story

The story

Sunny has always been the sensible daughter, the one who never fights her family over anything. When she earns provisional acceptance into graduate school, her mother Judith Hawkins brings home two laptops: a sleek new MacBook for her older sister Fiona Charlton, and an older, basic model for Sunny. Judith insists the choice is fair, but Sunny and Fiona are in the exact same graduate program.

Determined to prove herself, Sunny spends three sleepless nights writing a research proposal and wins a coveted spot in Professor Wilson's premier lab. Her mother promises to sign the consent form, then quietly replaces Sunny's proposal with Fiona's, handing the position to her sister. Judith explains that Sunny is capable enough to earn other chances, while Fiona needs protecting. At dinner, the roast beef is seasoned with rosemary, Fiona's favorite.

Returning to her room, Sunny finds Fiona at her computer, a flash drive in hand, copying the lab's research materials she cannot even understand.

Opening excerpt

The day I received my provisional acceptance into a graduate program, my mom came home carrying two shopping bags with the Apple logo on them.

She said with a smile, "Since you're both heading to graduate school, I bought each of you a new laptop. It's only fair."

My sister eagerly tore open her bag. Inside was the latest MacBook—sleek, lightweight, and beautiful.
