Story
The story
Hannah has spent years studying without pause, driven by her parents' violent fights and her mother's crushing disappointment. She starves herself, sleeps in scraps, and stabs her own thigh with a drafting compass to stay awake, all to earn the Harvard acceptance letter she believes will finally bring her peace.
The day the letter arrives, she overhears her mother and father laughing behind their bedroom door. The screaming, the blood, the scar on her mother's temple — every wound was stage makeup, a calculated performance meant to guilt her into success. Her stomach, ruined by years of painkillers and skipped meals, begins to fail her, yet her mother waves off her pleas for a hospital and drops a stack of college prep books on her desk.
When her parents stage another fight and wait for her to kneel and beg, Hannah simply closes the door and reaches for the compass once more.
Opening excerpt
When I came home, my father was slamming the door on his way out, fresh off another violent rage.
I ran to my mother, sobbing, throwing my arms around her bloodied shoulders, only to be met with a stinging slap across my face.
"I endure all of this because of you! If you had just gotten straight A's, your father wouldn't have blamed me for spoiling you!"
