Story

The story

Seven months pregnant, Vivian is made to climb ladders and hang Christmas decorations so her husband Logan can welcome his childhood friend Amber home from abroad. At the party, Amber presses a glass of red wine on her; when Vivian refuses, Logan flips the table, calls her bloated and sickening, and shoves her barefoot out into a howling blizzard. He stays inside with Amber, promising to have Vivian on her knees begging forgiveness.

What Logan does not know is that Vivian rises from the snowbank and calls her best friend Nina, an OB-GYN, with one sentence: she is terminating the pregnancy. Nina supports her, but the induction legally requires both spouses' signatures. Vivian returns to find Amber installed in her home, a size-XS dress offered as a Christmas gift, and Logan's cruel words about her body drifting through the bedroom door.

A flimsy piece of paper now carries her entire future, and she must find a way to get his signature.

Opening excerpt

All to welcome his friends and his childhood bestie, Amber, who had just returned from abroad.

He claimed it was to give them that familiar, festive holiday vibe.

At the party, Amber walked up to me with a beaming smile, holding out a glass of red wine.

"Vivian, a little red wine boosts blood circulation. Pregnant women in Europe drink it all the time."

The guests immediately joined in, cheering and pressuring me to take the drink. Cold-faced, I waved my hand and firmly refused.
