Nine Years of Silence

For nine years, Elena has been the hidden advisor of the DeLuca Family: cleaning its port books, negotiating its shipping routes, taking a bullet for its Don, Matteo. At the banquet where Matteo promises to finally acknowledge her, the screen instead names her sister Cecilia as the Family's new advisor, and Matteo slides the matriarch's black diamond ring onto Cecilia's finger.

Her parents, Enzo and Viviana, knew all along; her mother tells her to step aside as repayment for a scar Cecilia took in a warehouse explosion. In the stairwell, Matteo calls the ring a token of protection and asks for more time, but the betrothal crest on his tie clip betrays him. That night she answers the Bellano Family's long-standing offer to become their chief cross-border advisor.

Matteo returns with pesto pasta, forgetting the pine-nut allergy that once nearly killed her. Her calm frightens him more than any accusation.
